Self-addressed questions and honorifications: The case of Japanese daroo-ka/desyoo-ka

Abstract Japanese self-addressed questions (SAQs) are either marked with SAQ question particles (i.e. kana, yara ) or modals daroo desyoo . The present paper argues that the pragmatic profile of SAQs should not be limited to solitary contexts. presents an experiment examining whether daroo-ka/desyoo-ka can perceived as in accompanied results indicate felicitously uttered presence a second (socially higher) person. Apart from experimental study, this also pilot study comparing daroo-ka and plain information-seeking those without urgent situation preliminary shed light on fact native speakers interpret canonical performance indirect speech acts.
